LET'S READ! Kids Back to School FEST was a huge success welcoming over 1300 attendees and distributing hundreds of backpacks throughout the day. The entertainment was stellar. The day started off with performances by the Conjunto Heritage Taller and their youth. (See photo below)

Wait a minute... where are the kids?? Oh yeah, having a great time on the plaza while mom & dad hold a place in line and listen to Mary Grace Ketner Storyteller. Please note, this incredible storyteller had the undivided attention of all ages... front row seats filled with grandparents listening very intently.
By the way, a new series on the plaza, Twilight Tales Storytelling by Mary Grace, Sundays at 6:00 pm September 11, 18, 26 and October 2. Mark your calendars. Maybe plan to have dinner at El Oasis on Main Plaza and make a night of it.
Fingerprinting, library cards, tutoring, health insurance, nutrition & vitamins, Yoga for a healthy stretch, hands-on arts & crafts, games, and can you believe, a magic show. I'm still trying to figure out how he did that!!
Music, oh yes, back to the music ... piano on the plaza? it works! Piano playing music at its best and he sings too. A full house, so to speak, the plaza was filled with an appreciative audience to some great tunes. Alamo Music Center also provided a "Music Instrument Petting Zoo" introducing hands-on, one-on-one with an instrument. I think we encouraged some future band members.

It was a great day on the plaza. A lot of kids went home happy. We did our job.

About Mary Grace:An author with teaching experience in Language, Arts, English, Spanish and Special Education and work as an eductional specialist in a museum of history and culture, Mary Grace understand the role of artistry in advancing a community of learners. Her interactive story programs address the scope and sequence of each grade's Social Studies content as well as the TEKS for language arts.

Main Plaza Conservancy's 2011 Gala, May 26, celebrates William Scanlan, Jr. as the 2011 recipient of the "Phil Hardberger - Heart of the City" award.

This "original" GALA award is custom made each year by Garcia Art Glass, Inc. Pedestal base is transparent with a white ribbon of glass circling up to hold the "heart". This represents the hard work and heart Former Mayor Phil Hardberger put into making the dream of a redeveloped Main Plaza a reality. Main Plaza, the "heart of the city" is a vibrant gathering place for all to visit and enjoy.

Rolling out of San Antonio, Texas in the early 60's, the Sir Douglas Quintet, a musical partnership formed with Doug Sahm, brought such hit tunes as "Mendocino" and "She's About a Mover." By fusing Tex-Mex, Conjunto and soulful rock together along with the power of Meyers' distinctive Vox organ, an impact that is still being felt in rock 'n' roll today. While the Sir Douglas Quintet never broke up and never succumbed to the lure of the oldies circuit, when Meyers and his musical cohorts decided they wanted to do something different, they did. That led to the formation of The Texas Tornados and a Grammy award-winning South Texas sound. Meyers worked steadily with Sahm until the kinetic guitarist/vocalist passed away in 1999. Meyers has always pursued projects that interest him as an individual and as a collaborator and has long refused to lock himself into one style of music.
Augie Meyers' style and his Vox Continental has become one of music's most distinctive keyboard sounds around. Augie can be heard with the Sir Douglas Quintet, Texas Tornados, Meyers’ solo efforts as well as on landmark albums by Bob Dylan (”Time Out of Mind” and “Love and Theft”) and John Hammond (“Wicked Grin”). Echoes of the Meyers' style and sound can be heard in the music of the Doors, the Kinks, the Animals as well as the Beatles just to name a few.
